(September 2012) Skiers and boarders in Middlefield Connecticut are pleased to learn that after a 6 year hiatus Powder Ridge ski area is under new ownership. Sean Hayes, the owner of Brownstone Exploration and Discovery Park, a local company operating a swim/snorkel, rock climbing, cliff jumping, zip line, and hike/bike center among other things, has purchased the 226 acre mountain from the town for $700,000. At this time it’s unclear as to whether the ski area will open for the 2012-2013 ski season. While the new owners plan to invest $2 million, the facilities have not been used since 2006 and have fallen into disrepair. Lifts, lighting, snowmaking, etc. are currently being evaluated for functionality and safety. In the interim the mountain may operate as a tubing hill this winter but the intention is to return to operating as a ski area when possible.
